Students' works
Questionnaire about homeless and elderly people
Answers of Estonian, Romanian and Croatian students
1. What is your personal attitude about homeless people? Why so?
- I am interested in how did they ended up homeless, what was the reason. I would like to help them but i can’t if they don’t help themselves, beacause many of homeless people also drink alot and then there’s no use of giving them money.
- Theyre own fault, because they are lazy or they dont want to do any work. This city have all opportunities to help homeless, but if homeless dont want help...
- I sometimes feel pity to them or i give them a money, to have some food.
- I keep distance, cause they tend to look revulsive, but I don’t despise them, unless they give me a reason.
- I feel sad for them. Because they have no home to live and so on.
- My feelings are mixed: blame and pity, and only one student said that he has a very bad opinion about the homeless.
- I think that most of them become homeless due to excess of alcohol and drug consume
- I keep distance, cause they tend to look revulsive, but I don’t despise them, unless they give me a reason.
- I am neutral . In those things but certainly I dont blame them because I dont know them or their situation.
- They are normal people, but the have bad financial situation due to they sometimes tend to drink a lot alchol or they have lost a job etc.
- Usually I have pitty of them and it makes me sad, but it depends, beacause some of the homeless people are just lazy, they even don`t want to work and they like the life they live.
Do you think homeless people face barriers in accessing services for homeless people?
80% of respondents are agree with this:
- Yes, sometimes they have not enough courage and self-confidence to stand for themselves and for their rights
- Yes, with drunken head nobody wants to help them exept police and certainly drugs.
- Yes, theres not enough space for all homeless people in the shelters
What are the barriers in accessing services for homeless people?
| barrier | description |
| Lack of information about availability of services | They just don`d hear about their abilities which are available; Homeless do not have access to media |
| Having no fixed address | There is too much confusion; It's hard to find homeless people to help them |
| Location of services | The services are too far away; Bad transprtation or none at all, if the place is too far than people cannot go |
|
Entry/eligibility criteria for services (e.g. must not be ‘using’ to access service) |
For some of the homeless people it`s very hard to not „use“ and because of that they don`t get for example accommodation |
| Opening hours | Even when homeless people can spend their night „under the roof“, in the day-time they have no place to spend their time and they have to be on the streets. |
| Client’s mental health problems | Usually homeless people don`t have the sickness insurance |
